Happenings as of late, and the music I've been listening to.....

-Vacation to LA & Vegas (got a taste of where I want to live, and got my first lesson at the Tim Dralle School of Rock N'Roll)

-Sold the motorcycle, i'm sad, but didn't get to ride it as much as i'd have liked to, and it's an expensive extra to have around.....so i bought a Gibson SG Classic, and i love it dearly.....

-interviewed for a couple of different positions w/in the company, and got neither, but it's okay...i still love what i do.

-the band is throwing in the sweatrag.....last show will be Sun. Nov 5th @ Congress w/ the Reunion of NAKED RAYGUN!!!! (not to mention: Bolweevils, Blue Meanies, Deals Gone Bad, Effegies, Massacres, and more....)

-met a girl. i like her. she likes me. the rest is personal.

-wrote off some people, as they've become more like acquaintances, and further more have proven they don't have the slightest clue of what "LOYALTY" is...so fuck 'em....the ones i've chosen to remain close with, in fact DO understand Loyalty, not to mention, act upon that dying trait in this materialistic world.....

-started working at Estelle's and i love it...i never sleep as it is, so why not get paid to be awake and make some new friends, too....

-got some more ink done, i love it--elbow hurts like a motherfucker though, if you say it doesn't i'm coming after you w/ a flaming sledgehammer.

I saw Pearl Jam lastnight for the first time EVER. I'd been into them since just before "TEN" was released....how've I never seen them before?? I seriously fell in love with that band all over again after lastnight....and Mike McCready is one of the best fucking rock guitarists of today...

what a great set....2-1/2 hrs of rock n roll, and eddie vedder went through 2 bottles of wine. Granted the show didn't affect me until i got home, or woke up this morning...i had different feelings AT the show, and it took a bit for the emotion to set in...i felt that "Even Flow" was a bit lack-luster, until the last 1/3 of the solo--it felt as if they were just 'going through the motions', then eddie stepped back and let the band sort of just jam it out...the initial 2/3 of the solo were very noodley, and off, not McCready's greatest, but then all of a sudden, as if his in-ear monitors had been off, turned on, and the solo picked up and was just amazing. THAT is the Mike McCready guitar playing i know and have come to love more over the years...then the show sort of picked up...the crowd was sort of iffy, not really gettin into it until "Even Flow" b/c aside from the opener, "Release", the first 4 or 5 songs were from the latest album. But i suppose, w/ an arena crowd, that is to be expected. I got chills when they played "Given To Fly", "Low Light", and the hair stood on the back of my neck when they dug deep into one of my favourite albums, "No Code" and played "I'm Open"...I wouldn't say that this show was close to a religious experience, but i WOULD say that i feel a bit more complete for have finally seeing them...
...we snuck closer during the last encore break,and we were really close to Mike McCready. that's when the smile got huge on my face, and the chills kicked in full effect. to hear some great tracks off of "Vs." was amazing, and then to hear "Baba O'Riley" and last, "Yellow Ledbetter"-wow! During the end of "Yellow Ledbetter", Eddie sat down, smoked his cigarette/joint, nursed his 2nd bottle of wine and just watched in awe, as Mike soloed his ass off--just beautiful. Very soulful, and Hendrix/Page/SRV-infused style...just breathtaking.

Another funny thing about lastnight: it was only the 2nd show i've ever seen at United Center. The first show i saw there was The Who doing "Quadrophenia" on Oct. 31st, 1996--which was my first concert EVER. And if it weren't for The Who, there'd have been no Pearl Jam. And on a symbiotic note, if it weren't for Pearl Jam, i'd not have gotten into The Who--so it was a weird 'aligning of the planets' type thing that lastnight I saw one of my favourite bands for the first time, in the same venue as my first concert ever, which also happens to be another one of my favourite bands--10 years apart.

..and today i recieved Faith No More's "Double Feature" DVD set-which contains the following:

FNM was the band responsible for me getting into hardrock/metal, and i am forever changed and grateful to them for such a huge service....

holy crap-

this album is friggn amazing....i'm 2 songs into the 1st disc, and it seriously brought tears to my eyes.......not only am i exstatic that there's stil great music out there, but it hit me on a personal level, as well. When I was first really getting into music, on my own, i'd memorize the record labels and distribution, the producers, engineers, singers, songwriters, guitarists, etc....and now, i work in that facit--the behind the scenes area--i work for the label, and its friggn amazing.....

Pick it up, i highly suggest it.

"Mellon Collie & The 60-Minute Sadness"

So I was asked to post lists n whatnot, more often...so here goes...

My friend, Tim, tried to start a little thing amongst our 'circle of friends' called The Babysitters Club...j/k...no, he wanted to have a little "compilation" camp of sorts....there were like 8 of us or so...Tim, his GF-Rebecca, D.C., Pat, Ginny, Andie, Pete, and Me...wow that is 8, good guestimation on my part....he had the 1st 'assignment' due at the end o'november/mid-december which was simply "grab-bag" where you get someone's name and you have to make a comp. of whatever you wanted--whether it be things you think they would like, or things that the DO like or things you wish you can do to them using song titles, whatever...my name chosen (out of a hat-literally) was Pat..i didn't know, seeing as i really haven't hung w/ him or talked music in some time--i opted to get creative and use song titles to spell his name:
Patrick Wayne Thomas.

I thought it came out pretty kick ass, but alas, nobody but Tim, Rebecca, and myself have handed anything in...and on top of which, i've already done the next 'assignment' and Tim feels bad b/c i'm making everyone look like chumps....well, that'll happen when all i do is spend time on ze puter and stay up till wee hours of the night.....i should get a 2nd job...(right w/ what fucking time??)

this 2nd 'assignment' i speak of is teh subject of the blog---take the legendary double-album "Melon Collie & The Infinate Sadness" by Smashing Pumpkins, and make it into a 60-minute endeavor...holy fun project, batman..i'm all-in!!!!

2) Finding that PERFECT song to open/close a really good compilation cd.

Green Day/Jimmy Eat World 8/10: great show--J.E.W. was a bit thin sounding vocally, but was a good solid set, nonetheless. Green Day: WOW! great set, starting w/ the opening song "American Idiot" which b/c of B.J.'s antics, was a 7min rendition! Great frontman and not just for a few songs, but the entire 2hr set!!! He got the kids going from the first downbeat to the last audible frequency of the set. They played some hits, and some not-hits...."King for a Day" which is always fun, "Knowlege" the OP-Ivy cover they did on Kerplunk! and they picked kids out of the crowd to play the instruments for the last verse...and they played a bunch of stuff from American Idiot....many cellphones/lighters in the dark auditorium for "Wake Me Up When September Ends" and "Blvd. of Broken Dreams"........their final encore song was "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)", so made my way back to the 'VIP' area (free beer and munchies)....if they'd played "Macy's Day Parade" , i'd have stayed.....and did i mention the PYRO?!!!

311--8/11...that looks weird.....what a fun show..and the rain held out! i've come to the conclusion (again) that i need to pick up the middle 3 albums (Soundsystem, Chaos A.D., and Evolver)...i have the first4 albums and the greatest hits, and now the new one Don't Tread on Me which is really fuckng good, though its short--37min....but great....

i'm sleepy....damn tryptohan!!!!

what the hell have i done recently....well....

saturday (aug. 6th) went to my very first OZZFEST up at Alpine Valley in East Troy, WI...

HOT TOPIC/2nd Stage:
..missed a few bands i'd wanted to see (the haunted, black dahlia murder, bury your dead), but caught most of the other ones....

Trivium--fuck me they're AMAZING! lots of energy
A Dozen Furies--they sounded good, i wasn't really paying attention....
Mastodon--these guys are going to rule the world, that's all i've to say....
As I Lay Dying--they're pretty energetic--i was kinda buzzed, but i liked what i saw...
Killswitch Engage--i always love seeing these guys play, the guitarist is a lot of fun....
Rob Zombie--holy buttnugget! A) he looks WAY different, he lost the "al jourgenson-esque" look, and went w/ his own self--major plus. B) how fun--he's super energetic, totally not what i was expecting, i loved it.
*note: all of the above bands, w/ the exception of rob zombie, trivium, and a dozen furies, were seen from the stage BEHIND the band (MAJOR DEVIL HORNS to JASON @ Heavy Hitter, Inc. and his lovely wife--the amazing A.J.--i love those 2!)--what a different perspective, especially for Mastodon, Brann, the drummer is fucking amazing--he's like a heavier-hitting, moderner, bad-asser Neil Peart--and Vinnie was drooling at the technique and precision....he was standing behind the drummer during every band possible, and his favourite was mastodon.

Main Stage:
In Flames--they were okay. i'd seen em open for Soulfly and Slayer a few years ago at the Riviera.
Black Label Society--never seen em--they were pretty good, and Zakk Wylde kicks ass on guitar, there were moments where it seemed a bit self-indulgent, but it still rocked nonetheless.
Shadows Fall--these guys kick fuckin' ass--Brian Fair, the singer, has these amazingly long dreads, and gets up on a block on stage and swings em everywhere...badass *note: i was talkin w/ brent, guitar (stage right) of mastodon, and brian came up--he's not very tall and his dreads are past his knees.
Mudvayne--WOW--lots of energy, not too bad, i needed caffeine at this point, but it was a strong set...the bassist is really fucking good.
Iron (fucking) Maiden: HOLY SKELETON METAL!!! they only played songs from the first 4 albums, and that was fine by me...these guys are amazing, bruce dickinson, the singer, has so much fucking energy, i thought he was gonna jump right into the crowd a few times....and eddie kicks ass!
Black Sabbath: ok, the thought of leaving after a few songs in order to beat traffic HAD indeed crossed my mind, but i'll admit that was definately a premature notion. once they started playing, i was in awe...taken back to my early teens, as an aspiring guitar learner...my first 2 or 3 songs i learned to play all the way thru were "War Pigs" and "Iron Man" and quite possibly "Snowblind"...needless to say Tony Iommi had back then become one of my top 5 guitar heroes...and after seeing them nearly 12years after i first picked up a guitar, i was reminded that he still does reign as one of my top 5 favourite guitarists of all time. SO fluent, SO precise...it was amazing....and OZZY....WOW! Ozzy was not as stuttery and incoherint as he normally seems....he was like a little kid again, running around stage throwing buckets of water on the crowd....waving his arms....at one point he heaved a waterbottle off the stage and it nearly hit me in the head (yes we were that close--thanx to mr DAVE, one of my fantastic bosses--and i happened to be oggling at a female walking past--oops--but you can't blame me, isn't the "SEX" first in the 3 most important things in life? "SEX, DRUGS, and ROCK & ROLL"?!)....
..so all in all, my first Ozzfest was a success, and i'll most likely be going back next year...assuming the bands are ones i'd like to see......tentatively, Vinnie and I are intending on riding our 'hogs' up there (i'm aiming at gettin one come late winter/early spring) and spending the night......

It's Been a while....

...ok, i'm not quoting STAIND....but it happened to fit, so fuck off.

It indeed has been some time since i blogged my lil fingers off.....a lot has been goin on since Feb. 05, when i last updat'd this lil bitch.

feb--nothin special happend-it was fuckin cold in Chi-town.
march--went to VEGAS for my grandma's 75th bday---good times, i won some loot, got silly on vodka-tonics, and got to see my munchkin-head niece....she's bigger now than she was in march...that's usually how that works though, seeing as she'll be 2 in sept.
april--interviewed and got the hell out of the Q....i'm now in my nifty career---i'm the assistant to the REGIONAL MARKETING MANAGER at Warner Bros. Records!!! started 4/26, and loving every effing second of it!!!! got LOTS o music, seen some decent fuckin shows....paid off the credit card, and now i can afford to SAVE money!!!! havent' done that in like....well, never.
may--kinda bleding in to everything else....nothin really stands out....mum's b-day.....acquiring MORE cd's (for free)....mmmmmm thats bout it...more concerts.

Transplants were okay, way overhyped, but they did WHITE RIOT by the clash and i think i was the only person who knew what it was. Dropkick Murphys fuckin brought it as usual. Offspring was fun as they usually are...i missed Throwrag due to my curiosity of transplants--hindsight says i should've gone to throwrag instead. Atreyu kicked my ass. Lordz of Brooklyn were amusing at best. I'm pissd i missed Strung Out, they rock balls. but the highlight of the day was Avenged Sevenfold. holy rock n roll, i was BLOWN AWAY by their performance--even though it was only about 5 songs---wow! brought my lil cousin on the bus and got her a poster signed...had a shot w/ the boys n got some guitar pointers from SYNYSTER GATES....waxed intellectual (on the topics of vocal coaches, rock n roll, and fishing) w/ M.SHADOWS, and watched ZACKY VENGENCE walk back w/ a bottle of booze and 2 hot blondes to the "private area". good times)(7/23)

so i've been ass busy lately.....can't recall what i've really been absorbing musically. got a copy of WARRANT'S 1989 Opus "DIRTY ROTTEN FILTHY STINKING RICH" from a friend @ sony, it was a re-release.....man what an awesome album!!!! classics like "DOWN BOYS", "D.R.F.S.R.", "RIDIN' HIGH" and not to forget the monster ballad "HEAVEN".........

.....i also recieved "OBSESSION" by Eighteen Visions. not what i'd expected. their older stuff was WAY heavier, this album is a bit more polished, modern, in that radio-ready sense.

*side note: I LOVE LIVING IN THE CITY (by FEAR) just came on!!!!

Another cd i was privied to attaining from the almight POZ, is "DANCE OF DEATH" the 2003 release by IRON MAIDEN, w/ a short-haired Bruce Dickinson.....what can i say, its fucking MAIDEN. nothing new to report.

so i was at the WINTERFRESH SNOWCORE 2005 show @ the congress theatre on saturday which featured CHEVELLE, HELMET, CROSSFADE, FUTURE LEADERS OF THE WORLD, and STRATA:

Strata--the 1 song i saw, wasn't terrible, but wasn't great...i'll have to listen to the promo-cd i got of theirs from work.

F.L.O.W.---well what can i say, they LITERALLY put me to sleep. i'm sure they're good---they have a song on the radio, its okay, nothing to write home about---it is a familiar feeling that i hope goes away--think NICKELBACK circa 1999 w/ "LEADER OF MEN" what a boring track....ugh...now look at em---i hope this doesn't happen w/ Future Leaders, b/c they're obviously current followers of the trend.

CROSSFADE--so we make fun of their single at work all the time and if you didn't think it could get any worse, it does.....you can't tell from the single song (probably b/c its not utilized in it) but the band has a "Turntable-ist"---fucking CREED w/ a DJ!! if it wasn't bad enough....and the "turntablist" is a backing vocalist--how......LINKIN PARK of them.

now to the 2 bands that fucking mattered:

HELMET: holy goddamn! (a pre-emptive: the empty bottle show nov. 6th was WAY better) what an amazing set. while they were playing it occurred to me that the crowd wasn't really gettin into HELMET as i would've been had i been on the floor (and 4 years younger---shit even 2 years younger) HELMET is an older band, and unfortunately the fanbase at the snowcore show was all suburban-mtv-chevelle fans (that apparently don't read much) and weren't feeling the helmet groove--helmet even tried helping by playing songs that the hot topic ailed crowd may've heard such as an AMAZING version of "JUST ANOTHER VICTIM" which appeared on the Judgement Night soundtrack (they were accompanied by House Of Pain on that track--but didn't do the 'rap' segment/breakdown at the end at the show) "MILQUETOAST" which appeared on The Crow soundtrack, "IN THE MEANTIME" and "UNSUNG" 2 of their biggest singles, and "IN THE MEANTIME" was actually covered by SOULFLY on their latest release Prophecy. All-in-all, helmet was amazing.

CHEVELLE: well, i've seen these guys so many times. they had a solid set and i really can't expand on that much more. clever stage setup/lighting. straightforward really. nothing out of the ordinary. i still wish they'd play "Open/Point #1" again live, those were awesome, as was "MIA"---some more tracks from Point #1 live would be appreciated. the track "Forfeit" from Wonder What's Next was good, as was "Comfortable Liar".

to sum it up, the only bands worth seeing were HELMET and CHEVELLE, which was my original thought......next week RISE AGAINST/ALEXISONFIRE/TSUNAMI BOMB/METHADONES @ Metro........fun fun.

OH:
last friday saw SECRET MACHINES @ metro---excellent show--i got silly drunk which was nice. they had Radiohead's lighting guy for this tour doing the lights which added very well.

-so a lil excitement lately....sorta. Got, yet ANOTHER contact for my list o' contacts at record labels.....was called from a guy @ Geffen regarding something work related, he was misinformed as to my position, but i was nonetheless, flattered. So I'm dealing w/ him a little bit, which is good.
-I interviewed for a promotion to a full-time/salary position at work, hopefully something comes of it..i've also got some other irons on the fire......if you know me, you know that to be a pretty constant thing.
-I made some badass chili yesterday while stuck at home in the fucking blzzard of 1997, er what year is it?.........and then i got picked up and went to a nice lil pub n got blitzed on half-a-dozen pints.........mmmmmmmmm.......

Picked up Panopticon by ISIS, and holy fuck is it amazing. It was put out under IPECAC, Mike Patton's (Faith No More, Mr. Bungle, Fantomas, etc...) label. It's thick, creamy, and full of Instru-Metal goodness.......some vocal wailing at times....but this reminded me of some other bands...PELICAN, which all i own is the 4-song ep, and its kick nuts heavy.....they've a newer one under HydraHead, which is a label responsible for other Hardcore/Instru-Metal greats as BOTCH.......so i popped those out too, for good measure...amazing, just amazing. If you've the means i HIGHLY suggest you pick up an album by BOTCH, probably their last one An Anthology Of Dead Ends

i have been REALLY getting into the LAWRENCE ARMS as of late.........all i have is their latest, i'm awaiting the first couple.....i do like the song which i quoted for the subject--Porno And Snuff Films. its excellent and F-U-N to sing along to......
i was given a copy of THE FALCON cd which is Lawrence Arms, Rise Against, and Alkaline Trio........it takes a couple of initial listens, but SHIT its GREAT!!! GOod ol' chicago grit....Arms vocalist...i really enjoy his voice----something about that Chicago Rock Gravelly Vocal.........(see: Land Of The El Caminos)
i was also privy to a copy of Reinventing Axl Rose by AGAINST ME!
goddamn, i really like it........i've heard em, and everyone is raving about em........figured it give it a whirl and its just fun and angry and everything rolled up into a little punk-burrito......makes you feel alive.......or at least makes ME feel alive.

side note: i also wrote 2 songs on the guitar........yay me. (er well 1-1/2 songs, i'm still workin out the kinks (no pun intended) from the 2nd song.)

and thinking about that--------the ending instrumentation to Layla by Derek and the Dominos is a tear jerker --- i think it shows the true feeling of the song--yeah the main riff is rockin, but the song is depressing, and heartfelt--it's Eric Clapton professing his love or whatnot to George Harrison's WIFE....shit, to want what you cannot have--total rock n roll paradigm...and i think just that instrumental at the end says it all, its gorgeously painful.

and imagining all these makes me think of the scene in The Royal Tennenbaums that Elliot Smith's Needle In The Hay comes on..........oooh, shivers.

ok, so instead of posting AFTER listening to something, I think i'll try something new. I don't know what sort of 'mood' i'm in seeing as i'll be in a loaner-car for 1-2 weeks (a nice grandpa car--2005 toyota camry, and if that's not enough, it's that 'grandpa' gold colour....i think it's like CHAMPAGNE or some crap like that) and not my car (i had a name for it for about a week when i got it and realised it was stupid and i'm a HUGE dork, but can't bring myself to refer to my car by a name other than 'my car'. i hate relying on such, dare i say, technology (it really is technology, we're stuffing the power of many horses into a metal block, thus bringing us from point a to point b in a matter of minutes, seconds, blah blah blah) ....i'm sidetracking....so anyway, my car [glenn--named after glen danzig] is sick. something about a bad component in the cam or some crap....all i know is its waranty work, so ha!....moving on w/ my blog--my car is sick and there is no nifty sound system in the grandpa cruiser, so i must choose wisely.....
...yesterday was Psychadelic Furs, which i must say, they kick massive ass.....tracks like Into You Like A Train which i find (for obvious reasons) to be a superior version in comparison to--without taking kudos from--Jawbreaker's version on Dear You.

today i think i may bring in some Radiohead....perhaps How Am I Driving EP, Kid A, Amnesiac, and perhaps Hail To The Theif...basically post-OK Computer (w/ the exception of the EP)....

...lastnight i went to sleep w/ MORENO in the cd player---goddamn what a fantastic band (RIP). amazing chicago band--only saw em 4 or 5 times,but loved every show---especially the xmas show where they came out and went right into a stunning rendition of Little Drummer Boy, featuring 5 drummers (all of which were in chicago bands, i can't recall all of em, but i know Scott (drummer from moreno), the drummer from evil beaver, and 3 others--all drumming on snares like a bunch of post-drumcorps burnouts.........it was neat) and a HUGE guitar sound from Sean's stereo-chorus/bi-amplified unit....bogner and matchless amps.......mmmmmmm yummy creamy thick spacey sound.....ok. (small bit of info, Sean, the singer/guitarist of now defunct MORENO, works at MAKE N' MUSIC, an amazing guitar store in the city....w/ clientelle including but not limited to Trent Reznor (and touring NIN), David Bowie--i think--, and more....and me, i shop there when i've money....

So i'm super excited for sunday: DISENGAGE is coming to the bottom lounge...I first saw them @ SXSW about 4 years ago--and i LOVED em!!!! Saw Disengage again @ double door about 2 years ago, when i was FINALLY old enough to get in to see em--bought their album and Jason, the singer after talking to him for a bit and offering to buy him a beer, gave me a disengage t-shirt...how fucking cool of him...so i've been waiting for them to come back, and i emailed em about 4 months ago, and asked when they were comin back....'sit tight, we're workin on a tour' was basically the response---and alas, they're comin!!!!

i highly suggest seeing them.....

ok, so I've learned, as I do MANY times over--not to say that I forget--how important it is to a movie to have a KICK ASS soundtrack. Prime examples of directors/writers that RELENTLESSLY have amazing soundtracks to go w/ their STELLAR motion pictures: CAMERON CROWE and WES ANDERSON.

I was reminded by this necessity after seeing Wes Anderson's latest opus, The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou.
DAVID BOWIE through the entire movie, the only catch: it was sung in Portuguese. Iggy and the Stooges "Search And Destroy" added a rather anarchic element to an already anarchic scene. And at the most beautiful moment in the whole movie, the pinnacle moment, where silence would suffice: "Staralfur " by Sigur Ros.

Inspired, I decided to put in The Royal Tennenbaums...Packed full of musical goodness, "Judy Is Punk" by the Ramones, "Hey Jude" by The Beatles (Paul McCartney), "Needle In The Hay" by Elliott Smith, "Me And Julio Down By The Schoolyard" by Paul Simon....Amazing.

and every Wes Anderson film's score was done by DEVO's own Mark Mothersbaugh.....fun.


now I feel like watching something else...........w/ good music....possibly High Fidelity

damn what a great book......Nick Hornby is a fantastic writer, and has excellent music taste....I always (well, actually just recently) thought that it'd be great for Nick Hornby to write a book and Cameron Crowe direct it..........it'd be the ultimate!!!!!
